GraphQL vs REST: Choosing the Right API Paradigm
An honest comparison of GraphQL and REST to help you pick the right tool for your use case.
GraphQL exploded in popularity after Facebook open-sourced it in 2015. But does that mean you should replace your REST APIs? Let’s look at this honestly.
What is GraphQL?
GraphQL is a query language for APIs and a runtime for executing those queries. Instead of multiple endpoints, you have a single /graphql endpoint where clients specify exactly what data they need.
Response contains exactly those fields — no more, no less.
Where REST Shines
REST is battle-tested and universally understood. Every developer knows it, every tool supports it, and HTTP semantics map naturally to CRUD operations.
REST advantages:
- Caching — HTTP caching works out of the box (GET responses cached by CDN, browser)
- Simplicity — Easy to understand, document, and debug with
curl - Ecosystem — Swagger/OpenAPI, Postman, countless client generators
- File uploads — Multipart form data is straightforward
- No N+1 complexity — You control exactly what SQL runs for each endpoint
- Better for public APIs — Versioning and stability are easier
Where GraphQL Shines
GraphQL excels when clients have diverse, complex data needs — particularly mobile apps and dashboards.
GraphQL advantages:
- No over-fetching — Mobile gets only what it needs (saves bandwidth)
- No under-fetching — Get related data in one request (no waterfall)
- Strongly typed schema — Self-documenting, great IDE support
- Rapid iteration — Frontend adds fields without backend changes
- Subscriptions — Real-time updates built into the spec

My Recommendation
Use REST when:
- Building a public API
- Your clients are predictable (you control them)
- You need HTTP caching
- Your team is REST-experienced
- Simple CRUD operations dominate
Use GraphQL when:
- Multiple client types (web, iOS, Android) with different data needs
- Complex, nested data relationships
- Frontend teams need to iterate fast without backend changes
- You’re building an internal API for a product team
Consider both: Many companies run REST for public APIs and GraphQL for internal product APIs. That’s a perfectly valid architecture.
Don’t use GraphQL just because it’s trendy. Use it because it solves a real problem you have.
